CASE STUDIES
Gateway Building, University of Bournemouth
The Problem: The University of Bournemouth’s plans to build a landmark building were potentially hampered by a lack of knowledge about existing utilities and foundations relating to former buildings on the site.
The Challenges
-
The accurate location of existing utilities needed.
-
The survey had to comply to PAS 128 Utility Standard.
-
There were former buildings on site. Although historic plans existed, there were no records of how much of the foundations remained.
-
The site was a working car park and had to remain open.
The Solution
-
SUMO conducted a SUMO 128 Plus+ survey.
-
This is an advance level PAS 128 Survey which includes:
-
A full Utility survey compliant to PAS 128 level B M4P.
-
An additional full area survey with a high density radar.
-
Data collected every 8cm to locate below ground foundations.
-
-
SUMO completed the whole survey within 3 days, minimising disruption to the site.
-
The survey was carried out in 3 phases to allow the car park to continue operating

The Costs and Benefits
-
The survey cost less than £6,500.
-
It avoided the need for trial holes to locate both utilities and foundations.
-
The data obtained meant that the design could be reviewed to minimise cost.
-
Planning permission was granted in August 2018, to the client's delight!
“A very big thank you for responding to my survey query in such a professional and timely manner. Thank you and for addressing the situation with email communications, a return visit to site to undertake the additional work requested and a revised drawing issue the following week. The results are very useful in progressing design work. Your efforts are very much appreciated.”
