Andover Business Park on the site of the WW1 Andover Airfield
SUMO carried out a magnetometer survey over an area of some 50ha on an old airfield. The survey revealed several prehistoric ring ditches and a marked cluster of magnetic debris covering a circular area of some 200m diameter.
This can be seen in the highlighted box on the image to the left. Upon investigation this proved to be numerous small RFC ordnance which the RAF bomb disposal squad investigation proved were practice devices and not armed (see right).
All the devices that were discovered were removed and disposed of. It is likely that the ordnance were being used for practicing bombing raids on enemy trenches.
Avoiding the potential costs of the UXO Threat
The discovery of unexploded ordnance (UXO/EOD) on a development site is a cause for great concern. Apart from the obvious worry of injury to personnel, there is also the risk of damage to plant, structures, neighbours and reputation.
The potential costs could be substantial and the risk therefore needs to be assessed and mitigated as soon as possible.
The Three Stage SUMO Approach
1. Qualify the risk
A Desk Based Assessment (DBA) is carried out to research the site history.
2. Carry out a non-invasive site investigation
Should the DBA indicate the potential for UXO, a programme of on-site noninvasive investigation is carried out using geophysical survey techniques.
3. Unexploded ordnance monitoring, clearance and disposal
If found, UXO is cleared in conjunction with our partner Ramora, including emergency attendance if necessary.
